Test tuners are clipped on the headstock of the instrument. The tuner then picks up the vibration running through the instrument and uses this information to display an acurate representation of note pitch.

Test tuners are my preferred tuner due to the fact that they generally don't receive interference from surrounding sound sources, are pretty accurate and can be used on both electric and acoustic guitars.
